Jobs the Gen Z cohort prefer

The demographic group known as Generation Z prefers to enter the field of advertising and marketing, results of a recent survey by Jobstreet Philippines showed.

The “Law of Attraction” survey commissioned by online portal JobStreet Philippines showed 25% of the Gen Zs are into advertising, marketing, promotions, and public relations.

“It connects to the fun and collaborative driver that they’re looking at, hence I think that's why the Gen Zs value the advertising and PR industry,” JobStreet Philippines sales manager Paul Tuazon said in a press conference in Makati City on Thursday.

Generation Z is the demographic cohort born in the mid-1990s to early-2000s.

Accounting, audit, tax services industry (23%), back-office BPO (22%), and government (21%) are the next preferred jobs among the Gen Zs.

The figures for government were surprising, as it was among the top fields preferred by Gen Zs, Tuazon noted.

“The government position—what it offered to the Gen Zs and the millennials primarily is stability,” he said.

"Specially leaning towards the millennials, the millennials prefer stability because they're starting out their families, maybe nagpapaaral ng mga siblings,” he added.

The field of accounting got a lot of attention from Gen Zs, given the base pay the sector provides.

“For the accounting specialization naman, it’s primarily the Gen Zs that are looking for a higher rewards system kasi they’re also in an in-demand situation, especially the CPAs. Every company needs someone in finance, someone in accounting,” Tuazon said.

“The higher rewards system can come in many forms. Primarily it comes in the base salary. For accounting, it can be a higher base salary for new graduates as compared to new industries,” he added.

Here are the other fields the Gen Zs would like to be involved in:

  • Computer IT software; 19%

Conducted in January 18 to March 4, 2019, the survey covered a sample size of 18,378 from various industries in the country.

JobStreet noted, however, that the data is not a “nationally representative” sampling of the Philippine population—reflecting only those who are “in the market for a new job.”

“The sample is targeted to those who are actively seeking a job, or monitoring the job market and looking to change jobs within the next two years,” it said. —VDS, GMA News
