Grab Philippines rolls out free e-scooter service for frontliners

Grab Philippines on Monday rolled out GrabWheels, which provides e-scooters to health and medical workers on the frontlines in select cities across Metro Manila amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

In a statement, Grab said it is set to deploy over 300 e-scooters to select local government units (LGUs), on top of the 50 that have already been handed out.

"GrabWheels addresses the need for faster transportation of healthcare and medical workers to the front lines by providing them with round-the-clock, free-of-charge access to electric scooters deployed all over Metro Manila," the statement read.

According to the company, implementing policies for borrowing and returning of the e-scooters will depend on the directive of the corresponding LGUs -- initially available at the cities of Manila, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Pasig, Quezon, and San Juan.

In the same statement, Grab called on frontliners to do a quick check on the e-scooters -- check the battery level and tap on the scooter from the app to check its batter level before unlocking; and check the brakes, headlights, kickstand, and surroundings after unlocking.

"GrabWheels is one of several initiatives included in GrabBayanihan -- a community-driven initiative to safely address the economic and medical pain points brought about by the recent COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines," said Grab.

From 12 a.m. on March 17, the entirety of Luzon was placed on enhanced community quarantine until April 13, 2020, restricting travel within the region in efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.
