Smart partners with NTT Docomo for 5G roaming services in Japan


PLDT Inc.'s wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. on Tuesday announced a partnership with Japanese telco firm NTT Docomo to roll out 5G roaming services in Japan.

With the partnership, prepaid and postpaid customers of Smart in Japan can avail of 5G data roaming speeds through the GigaRoam Japan Plan which offers a 3GB data package for P1,299 valid for 10 days.

According to Smart, NTT Docomo is Japan's leading mobile operator with over 80 million subscriptions. It has rolled out its 5G network service across hundreds of Japanese cities and across all prefectures of the country.

"This partnership with NTT Docomo helps us provide an unmatched 5G roaming experience for Smart customers in Japan," Smart Vice President and Head of Roaming and Consumer Business Alice Ramos.

Smart has existing partnerships with Vodafone in Australia; China Mobile in China; Zain in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia; Etisalat and du in the United Arab Emirates; FarEasTone in Taiwan; and KT Corp. in South Korea.

Smart rolled out its 5G services in select areas in 2020, providing key districts with handsets and 5G-activated sim cards.

Smart's parent company PLDT earlier said it is prepared to invest between P88 billion and P92 billion this year to meet the requirements of all its mobile and fixed-line customers.

Shares in PLDT opened Tuesday at P1,240 apiece, unchanged from Monday's finish. They are down P11.00 or 0.89% to P1,227.00 apiece as of 11:20 a.m.—AOL, GMA News
