Burger King Philippines experiences shortage in onions

Hamburger chain Burger King Philippines on Wednesday said its operations are affected by a shortage in supply of onions in the country.

“Our onions are a bit hard to come by these days due to a shortage in regular supply affecting our Whopper and other flame-grilled burgers,” Burger King Philippines said on social media Wednesday.

Earlier this month, the Department of Agriculture confirmed that there is indeed a lack of supply of white onions in the market, but that it is already taking steps to address the matter.

Agriculture Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista said white onions are no longer in wet markets, “bagsakan” places, supermarkets, restaurants, and institutional buyers, based on their discussion with buyers.

Evangelista said the DA is considering importing white onion to fill in the demand.

A report by GMA News’ Jun Veneracion on 24 Oras on Tuesday, showed that based on the DA’s supply monitoring local and imported white onions are “not available” in markets in the National Capital Region.

Senator Imee Marcos, however, is not convinced with the DA’s statement that there is a shortage of supply in white onions, alleging this is merely “a modus operandi” and a “same old story,” according to a report on GMA News’ State of the Nation

“First, they smuggle. Then they create a shortage, and produce a legitimate import permit. By next week, I have no doubt smuggled onions will flood the market covered by a ‘legitimate’ importation order of gargantuan proportions,” said Sen. Marcos.

In its Facebook post, Burger King Philippines said menu items like the Whopper and other flame-grilled burgers have been affected as "onions are hard to come by these days due to a shortage in regular supply."

To make up for it, the chain is giving its customers options to replace the white onions with extra lettuce, extra tomatoes, or crispy onions. — LA, GMA News
