‘Human verification’ device vs. cyber threats to launch in PH

‘Human verification’ device to combat cyber threats to launch in PH

World, a global network focusing on people's identity and finances, is planning to roll out its “human verification” device across the Philippines this year in a bid to combat online fraud amid the proliferation of deepfake technology.

World’s device, called “The Orb,” aims help protect people from online threats and ensure their identities are verified.

Damien Kieran, World chief legal and privacy officer, told reporters last week that The Orb has successfully completed pilot testing in areas of Bulacan and will soon expand to popular spots in Metro Manila, such as Gateway Mall in Quezon City and Greenhills Mall in San Juan.

“The goal is for everyone to be able to use this device and benefit from it,” he said.

Kieran said that the need for a human verification device has become more urgent due to a sharp increase in online fraud such as cases of identity fraud linked to deepfake technology—where someone’s likeness is manipulated.

The World executive said introduction of The Orb is a significant step toward making the internet a safer place for all Filipinos, helping individuals and businesses feel secure online.

World and Tools for Humanity are teaming up with several local organizations, including the National Association of Data Protection Officers of the Philippines (NADPOP) and the Philippine Computer Emergency Response Team (PH-CERT), to strengthen online safety for Filipinos.

Kieran said, “Protecting people’s online presence is becoming increasingly important,” said Kieran, adding that World’s partnerships will bring advanced security solutions to enhance trust in online transactions.

Sam Jacoba, founding president of NADPOP, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Every Filipino deserves to be protected online. This is a big step towards a safer digital environment.”

Lito Averia, founding president of PH-CERT, underscored that cybersecurity is vital for the nation, saying, “This effort is about keeping everyone in the Philippines safe from online threats.” — BM, GMA Integrated News
