NAIA smoke due to power bank — NNIC

The smoke incident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Monday was due to a power bank that may have fallen on the carousel system, according to the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC).

NNIC said smoke was observed from Baggage Carousel 3 at Terminal 1 at around 4:55 p.m..

Airport emergency response teams were immediately deployed in response. They guided the passengers away from the vicinity, secured the area, and implemented ventilation measures.

Less than an hour later, authorities identified the source of the smoke as a power bank.

“The device caused a minor spark, which produced the smoke. There was no open flame, and the carousel remained fully operational after testing,” the NNIC said in a statement.

According to the NNIC, airport personnel then conducted clean up and operations resumed without disruption.

"We thank all responding teams and partner agencies for their swift action. The safety and well-being of passengers remain our top priority," it said. –Joahna Lei Casilao/RF, GMA Integrated News
