Maynilad rates to rise, Manila Water to drop in October
The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Regulatory Office has approved a new water rate adjustment, with Maynilad set to implement a price increase while Manila Water will roll back its charges.
The changes will take effect on October 1, 2025, under the approved Foreign Currency Differential Adjustment (FCDA) for the fourth quarter of the year.
According to MWSS, Maynilad customers will see an increase of P0.14 per cubic meter after its FCDA was set at -P0.19 per cubic meter, up from the current -P0.33 per cubic meter.
Meanwhile, Manila Water customers will benefit from a P0.15 per cubic meter decrease, as its FCDA was set at P0.38 per cubic meter, down from the current P0.53 per cubic meter.
The FCDA is a quarterly tariff mechanism that adjusts water rates to reflect fluctuations in the peso against foreign currencies. Payments for foreign-denominated loans, which fund water and wastewater projects, are covered through this system.
MWSS also urged low-income and low-consuming households to apply for the Enhanced Lifeline Program (ELP) of Maynilad and Manila Water. The program, introduced in January 2025, exempts qualified beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) who consume up to 20 cubic meters a month from FCDA charges and gives them access to discounted water rates.
“We remain committed to protecting consumer welfare, especially the most vulnerable, and to ensuring that water and wastewater services remain available, accessible, affordable, and equitable for all,” MWSS Chief Regulator Patrick Lester Ty said.—VAL, GMA Integrated News
