Hans Sy is named MAP’s Management Person of the Year 2025
China Banking Corp. chairman Hans T. Sy was chosen by the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) as Management Person of the Year 2025, citing his contributions to environmental stewardship, social inclusion, and good governance.
Sy’s selection was approved by the MAP Board during its meeting on Wednesday morning October 8, and was approved by the MAP General Membership that followed, following the unanimous recommendation of the Judging Committee.
“I have never seen myself as someone deserving of awards or recognition. I simply try to do my part. What matters most to me is using what we build to make a difference in our country,” Sy said in a separate statement.
“At SM, it has long been our responsibility to create spaces that protect people, support communities, and help Filipinos stand stronger for the future,” he added.
The criteria for the award includes integrity, prestige, and distinction in the business community, active and continuous management at the top level, effective service and tangible contribution to nationwide professional, social, civic, or charitable undertaking, and contribution to re-shaping national values and orientation.
“It is bestowed on exceptional persons who have posted a record of achievement and distinction as leaders and managers of organizations, and who are exemplary models who deserve to be emulated by their peers and by the younger leaders and managers,” the MAP said.
According to MAP, Sy was chosen for his lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship, social inclusion, good governance, and resilience, championing people-centered leadership and diversity, and for spearheading sustainable innovative and sustainable retail development.
The business group also cited Sy’s help in shaping global and local guidance on integrating disaster risk reduction, raising the Philippine flag in other countries such as China, and broadening access to quality education through the National University.
It likewise noted his support for vulnerable children through Child Haus, and his “unwavering integrity, exceptional managerial competence, and visionary leadership.”
To recall, Sy made in Forbes Asia’s “2019 Heroes of Philanthropy: Catalysts For Change” list, citing his $400,000 donation for a property that houses Child Haus in Quezon City, which provides poor provincial families with temporary shelter.
Sy, along with his siblings, control retail and property giant SM Group. They were reported as the country’s wealthiest family with $86 billion, based on Forbes Asia’s Philippines’ 50 Richest List released in August. — BM, GMA Integrated News
