Meralco rates up in October 2025
Households will have to pay more for electricity this month, as Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Monday announced upward adjustments due to the increase in generation charges for the month.
In an advisory, Meralco said it will increase rates by 23.31 centavos per kilowatt-hour (kWh), bringing the overall rate for a typical household to P13.3182 per kWh from P13.0851 per kWh in September. This will translate to an additional P47 in the total electricity bill of residential customers consuming 200 kWh.
The increase comes as generation charges for October increased by 19.03 centavos per kWh, as charges from independent power producers (IPPs) grew by 36.22 centavos per kWh, and from power supply agreements (PSAs) by 35.67 centavos per kWh.
The higher generation charges were largely driven by the depreciation of the Philippine peso, which affected 99% of the costs of IPPs, and 48% of PSAs. The Philippine peso has been trading at the P58:$1 level for most of October, and at P57:$1 for most of September.
The increase also reflected the impact of the interim extension of Meralco’s power purchase agreement as approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), and was slightly offset by charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) that declined by P2.0688 per kWh.
Transmission, taxes, and other charges for the month also increased by 4.28 centavos per kWh.
