1,350 MW of renewable energy up for grabs if Solar PH misses deadlines

More than 1,300 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy (RE) capacity could become available to other energy companies if Solar Philippines Power Project Holdings Inc. (SPPPHI) fails to meet its project deadlines.

According to Department of Energy (DOE) data, SPPPHI and its subsidiaries secured a total of 1,350 MW across six solar and wind projects under the Green Energy Auction (GEA)-1 program in 2021:

  • 200 MW Concepcion, Tarlac 2 Solar Power Project
  • 280 MW Santa Rosa, Nueva Ecija 2 Solar Power Project Phase 1B
  • 450 MW Tayabas Solar Power Project
  • 300 MW Kananga-Ormoc Solar Power Project
  • 120 MW General Santos Solar Power Project
  • 30 MW Calatagan Wind Power Project

The company also won a 20-MW solar project in Nueva Ecija under GEA-2.

However, none of these projects have been completed, and construction has yet to start, even though the December 2025 deadline is approaching.

Under GEA rules, the government can suspend or terminate contracts if companies fail to meet their commitments. These projects could then be re-auctioned to other developers.

The DOE has said it will crack down on idle renewable energy contracts, as the government aims to increase renewable energy’s share of the country’s power mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
