SNAP prepares for construction of two new battery storage projects
SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP), a joint venture of Aboitiz Renewables Inc. and Norwegian green energy firm Scatec ASA, on Wednesday announced it is preparing for the construction of two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Benguet with a total capacity of 80 megawatts (MW).
In a news release, SNAP said the projects include a 40-MW BESS at the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant (Phase 2) and a 40-MW BESS at the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant.
The company said both BESS projects will be co-located with its existing hydro facilities and are designed to provide ancillary services to the Luzon grid through the reserves market.
The new BESS projects will add to SNAP’s growing energy storage portfolio, including the 24-MW BESS at the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant, which has been delivering ancillary services since 2024.
The company also has two BESS projects under development, particularly 40 MW at Binga and 16 MW at Magat, scheduled to begin commercial operations later this year.
Once completed, SNAP said its total BESS capacity in operation and under construction will reach 160 MW.
The company said battery energy storage plays a critical role in supporting grid stability, providing fast-response services that help manage real-time frequency fluctuations, and enabling the integration of variable renewable energy sources. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
