Tycoon Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, popularly known as JAZA, has stepped down as chairman of Ayala-led telecommunications giant Globe Telecom Inc. after nearly three decades in the role.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Tuesday, Globe said JAZA will be succeeded by Ayala Corp. CEO Cezar Consing, a longtime Ayala Group executive.

Consing was elected chairman following Globe’s annual stockholders’ meeting on April 21.

“The leadership transition reflects Globe’s continued evolution as a leading digital telco, while ensuring strategic continuity under its new chairman,” the company said.

JAZA had served as Globe chairman since March 1996 and as a director since March 1989.

“Under JAZA’s stewardship, Globe underwent a massive network and IT modernization program that ushered in the age of data in Philippine telecommunications and reinvented Globe as a purveyor of the Filipino digital lifestyle,” the telco said.

“Under his guidance, Globe became an instrumental contributor to democratizing access to connectivity,” it added.

Globe said JAZA will continue to support the company through Asiacom Philippines Inc., the joint venture of Ayala Corp. and Singtel, which are Globe’s major shareholders.—MCG, GMA News
