Visayas grid on yellow alert anew on Thursday, June 18, 2026
The Visayas grid will be placed under yellow alert on Thursday due to the unavailability of several power plants and a high demand forecast, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.
In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert would be in effect from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 18.
The grid operator said available capacity was projected at 2,570 megawatts (MW), while peak demand was expected to reach 2,452 MW.
The factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration are the unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) 1, TVI 2, Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) 3, and KSPC 1, and high demand forecast, the NGCP said.
"11 plants are on forced outage on June 2026, 8 plants are on forced outage since May 2026, 1 plant since March 2026, 3 plants since 2025, 2 plants since 2024, 2 plants since 2023, and 1 plant since 2021, while 10 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 964.4MW unavailable to the grid," NGCP added.
A yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. —VAL, GMA News
