For the third week, prices of garlic remained high, going as high as P320 per kilo in some markets in Metro Manila as of Monday morning.
In Quezon City, prices of garlic rose to P320 per kilo at the Kamuning Public Market, according to a report by radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen.
However, the report said vendors got their supplies from Balintawak for P290 per kilo.
It added the vendors said the Department of Agriculture's "Bawang Caravan" did not have much effect because it made the locally grown garlic available only to retailers.
However, the report also said prices of ginger went down slightly from P200 per kilo to P140 per kilo.
Last June 20, prices of garlic appeared to start going down in markets in Metro Manila.
In at least one Metro Manila market last Friday, garlic prices fell to P250 per kilo, dzBB's Rodil Vega reported.
The market had been selling garlic at P270 to P280 per kilo for more than two weeks.
High prices of garlic had prompted the Department of Agriculture to deploy rolling stores selling lower-priced locally grown garlic. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
