BFAR bars catching of PHL’s most expensive fish ‘ludong’ until mid-Nov.

Until November 15, the government will ban the catching of the high-value fish "ludong" to allow it to multiply during its spawning season.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said this ban seeks to conserve what some consider as the Philippines' most expensive fish, radio dzBB's James Agustin reported.

Covered by the ban are Cagayan River including its tributaries, headwaters and watersheds; and Abra River and its tributaries extending to Santa River in Ilocos Sur and Cordillera.

Ludong has been known as a "president's fish" for its high price, costing as much as P5,000 a kilo.

But BFAR head Asis Perez said the closed season aims to increase the population of the fish "and lessen its high price.”

Alternate livelihood

A news release from the BFAR quoted BFAR Region 2 Director Jovita Ayson as saying they will implement alternate livelihood projects for affected fisherfolk.

Patrols

The BFAR and the Philippine Coast Guard deployed eight multi-mission boats to monitor and patrol the area.

Violators of the closed season may face imprisonment of six months to one year and/or a fine of P6,000 and forfeiture of catch and fishing gadgets.

"If the offense involves catching of spawning ludong during the closed season, a penalty of six months and one day to eight years imprisonment and/or fine of P80,000 shall be imposed," the BFAR said.

Also, it said exporters of spawning ludong will be penalized with eight years imprisonment, confiscation of catch and a fine equivalent to double the value of the fish.

Education campaign
