The City Optimized Managed Electric Transport (COMET) is seeking a franchise covering a new route for e-jeepneys, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) head said on Wednesday.
The franchise application is for the route SM North-Mindanao Ave.-Congressional Ave.-Luzon Ave.-Aurora Blvd. and vice versa, LTFRB chairman Winston Ginez said in a text message to GMA News Online.
The motion for a provisional authority was filed at the LTFRB National Capital Regional office on Tuesday.
According to the LTFRB chief, two COMET e-jeeps plying the SM North-Luzon Ave. route already secured a franchise.
Global Electric Transportation (GET) Philippines is the distributor of COMET e-jeepneys in the country.
Department of Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya rode the e-jeepney and inspected the proposed route on Wednesday.
"We hope this is the start of replacing smoke-belching and poorly-maintained jeeps with high-tech, efficient, and environmentally-friendly e-jeepneys,” Abaya said in an e-mailed statement.
The COMET e-jeep includes a reloadable card payment system called the GET pass. Each e-jeep has a WiFi connection, a flatscreen TV, and a security camera. – VS, GMA News
