DOE reports over 66,000 electric vehicles sold in 2026

More than 60,000 electric vehicles (EVs) have been sold in the country this year, the Department of Energy (DOE) said on Tuesday.

Of the 270,124 total vehicle sales for 2026, 24.68% or 66,685 were EVs, said DOE Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Patrick Aquino.

"Majority of the electric vehicles sold in the market are already plug-in hybrid vehicles, accounting for almost 30%; followed by hybrid electric vehicles or HEVs for another 20%; and the balance is now our battery electric vehicles," said Aquino in a press briefing.

The DOE said that it has also logged 60,906 EV registrations in 2025, which is more than a double increase from the 2024 level.

Moreover, the department also continues to report an increase in the number of registered charging points to 1,876 nationwide. Of this, 878 are AC charging points, 470 are DC charging points, and 528 are battery swapping stations.

Moreover, the DOE official said that it will soon issue a joint memorandum circular together with the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the Anti-Red Tape Authority for the streamlined permitting for the installation and operation of EV charging stations.

Aquino also bared that the DOE will also issue a department circular on the identification of specific private and public establishments for the mandated installation of EV charging stations.

In his fifth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. pushed for a transition to electric public transportation as he called on the electric vehicle (EV) industry to support the government’s transport modernization efforts.

Marcos later signed Executive Order No. 121, which provides fiscal incentives for the local manufacture of hybrid and battery electric passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and their parts and components. –NB, GMA News
