Given the marked improvement in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s air traffic management, the Department of Transportation and Communications is lifting the airport’s captain’s runway status.

Under a “captain’s runway” status, only captains could operate a takeoff or landing on the runway. This ensures that a flight is within the average of 100 seconds per movement, thus reducing runway occupancy and expediting aircraft movement.

The NAIA was placed in a captain’s runway status last May to decongest the country’s premiere gateway.

Prior to the implementation, first officers were allowed to facilitate flight takeoffs as part of their training.

“In view of the marked improvement in air traffic management, the DOTC is lifting the Captain’s runway status of NAIA, a measure aimed to reduce runway occupancy and expedite aircraft movement on the ground,” the agency added. — DVM, GMA News
