The Aquino administration is bidding out the supply contract for P434.5 million worth airport equipment for night landing operations in eight airports across the country. The supply contract covers communications equipment, meteorological instruments and power supply systems. The Department of Transportation and Communications and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines noted the need for such an upgrade in the airports' night landing capabilities, citing the robust state of the economy. “This situation shows positive growth in the country’s economy; however congestion of arriving and departing aircraft in Manila’s premier airport is a dilemma of the air transport sector and needs to be addressed by the DOTC and CAAP,” the government noted in an invitation to bidders. Air transportation is fast becoming one of the major modes of transportation in the country where many airports now have increased flight frequencies, according to the department and the aviation authority. Covered by the upgrade are the airports in  Butuan, Cotabato, Dumaguete, Tuguegarao, Dipolog, Roxas, Ozamis, and Busuanga. — VS, GMA News
