Transport group wants minimum jeepney fare raised to P10
Some jeepney drivers are mulling seeking a new fare hike, saying the 50-centavo hike on the minimum fare authorized by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is useless in the face of a coming oil price hike.
The groups are considering increasing the minimum fare to P10 from P8.50.
"Kung nagbigay na sila ng 50 centavos, P1.50 na lang ang hahabulin namin," said Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations president Efren de Luna.
Meanwhile, several motorists and drivers on Monday queued at gas stations in anticipation of a hike in the prices of fuel products on Tuesday.
In Quezon City, several motorists - some of them owning more than one vehicle - lined up to fill up their gas tanks, GMA News' Julis Segovia reported Monday evening on "24 Oras."
"Wala naman tayong magagawa, sila naman nasusunod," said one driver.
On the other hand, officials attributed the price hike to the tension in Iraq, but stressed the supply of fuel is stable.
"Bad news for us, apektado tayo sa galaw ng market," said Energy Undersecretary Zenaida Monsada. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
