CAAP: Tacloban airport to resume limited operations

After undergoing repairs to its runway, the Tacloban City airport will resume operations Thursday morning, but can accommodate only turboprop aircraft.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said the airport will resume operations at 6 a.m. Thursday but only for Q400 and ATR72 and below category aircraft.

"Starting 6 a.m., tomorrow, Sept. 4, Tacloban Airport limited to Q400, ATR72 and below category aircraft," it said.

Earlier this week, the CAAP said the airport would be temporarily closed to commercial flights starting Wednesday morning to allow repairs for its runway.

The CAAP said this will allow the repair of potholes on the runway caused by super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November 2013. Yolanda left more than 6,000 dead.

Tacloban City is among the areas hit hardest by Yolanda.

A report on dzBB radio said the CAAP had already discussed this with commercial carriers including Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, AirAsia and Tiger Air. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
