Duterte confident more Japanese businesses will invest in PHL

President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday told an economic forum in Tokyo that more Japanese businessmen may be enticed to invest in the Philippines as a result of official efforts to cultivate a milieu that is good for business.

"By cultivating an environment conducive in doing business, we are confident that more Japanese businesses will follow and go to the Philippines," Duterte said in a  speech before the Japanese business community at the Philippine Economic Forum at the Prince Tower Tokyo Hotel.

The President noted the government is "putting in policies aimed at ensuring stability in the macroeconomic policies, increasing competitiveness, improving ease of doing business, increasing spending in crucial infrastructure, and investing further in human capital development."

"We would like to see more investors and businesses setting up shops in the Philippines," he said, considering that the government is equally determined to generate more jobs by making it easier and more attractive to do business in the country.

Duterte emphasized that continuing the strong economic ties with Japan is a priority for the Philippines. "We look to Japan as a steady fulcrum in our regional engagement as the Philippines' first and only bilateral free trade partner today," he said.

"It has been our top trading partner, top source of improved investments, and second major source of official development assistance," he added.

The President was explicit in saying he is counting on Japan to further extend its valuable support in his country's pursuit of promoting rural development, increasing agriculture productivity, accelerating infrastructure spending, and investing in human capital development.

"These economic development tasks are necessary ingredients in making real growth impact on the lives of our people," Duterte added. — Ted Cordero/VDS, GMA News
