BDO Unibank Inc. on Friday sought to allay depositors' fears emanating from reports that some of its automated teller machines and accounts have been compromised.

"BDO reassures the public that there is no cause for alarm," the bank said in an advisory.

BDO said that ATMs are compromised every now and then, with skimming being the most common form.

"To protect our customers, we (banks) take the precautionary measure of proactively disabling the cards if we have reason to believe they may have been compromised," BDO said.

"In the meantime customers whose cards have been disabled can transact over the counter at our branches anytime," it added.

BDO earlier announced that it has obtained reports of potentially compromised ATMs following reported losses from cardholders.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is now monitoring the situation.

Incoming central bank Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. said the BSP is trying to get an idea of what the problem is.  —NB, GMA News
