BOC finds 4 luxury cars in shipment declared to have one car body only
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Cebu has discovered four units of luxury motor vehicles in a shipment from Japan declared to have only one car body for decoration.
In a statement, the BOC-Port of Cebu said the four luxury vehicles were found in a 1X40' container on Friday, January 4 after a physical examination was conducted based on the alert order issued for possible misdeclaration.
"The shipment imported by Kylemelan General Merchandise with office address at Malabon City arrived in the Port of Cebu last 19 December 2018 under Bill of Lading No. 181206750071 declaring the same to contain only one piece car body for decoration," it said.
"After undergoing x-ray inspection, the scanning image of the shipment, however, exhibited that the same actually contained four completely-build up motor vehicles," it added.
The discrepancy prompted the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) to request for the issuance of an alert order against the shipment for suspected act of misdeclaration under Section 1400 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), according to the BOC-Port of Cebu.
It said a 100 percent physical examination was conducted on January 3 by a customs examiner together with the importer’s broker and representatives from Enforcement and Security Service (ESS), CIIS, X-Ray Inspection Project (XIP-ESS), and Office of the District Collector.
"The examination yielded four units of undeclared luxury motor vehicles namely one unit Range Rover Evoque, one unit Porsche 911, one unit Mercedes-Benz, and one unit Alfa Romeo," the BOC-Port of Cebu said.
"The assigned examiner Abella and CIIS recommended for the issuance of Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) against the whole shipment for violation of Section 1400 in relation to Sections 1113 par. (f), (i) 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the CMTA," it said. —Ted Cordero/KG, GMA News
