Eggplant prices have dropped in select areas in the country, given the recent oversupply of the commodity.

According to a report on GMA's "24 Oras Weekend" on Sunday, one farmer found himself selling his crop at P6 per kilogram, just to be able to unload it.

"Nung kakaunti pa 'yung na-ani namin, mataas siya, inabot pa ng 50 [pesos] plus," said Regie Antolin, a farmer in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija with 1.5 hectares of land dedicated to eggplants.

"Kaya lang, noong marami na kaming na-ani, bumaba na, umabot ng 6 pesos per kilo," he explained.

In Tandang Sora Market, eggplant was being sold at P30 per kilo—and even then vendors were seeing many of the stock rot. "Sa amin nga lang, ang daming nabubulok kasi matumal," said Loi Sampang.

In Mega-Q Mart, meanwhile, eggplant was being sold at P25 per kilo.

Farmers are now requesting assistance from the government, especially from the Department of Agriculture (DA) to be able to keep profits amid the oversupply. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA News
