Palace OK with cash aid for all, but fund source big problem —Andanar

Malacañang on Thursday expressed willingness to provide cash assistance to households to ease the impact of the rising price of fuel, and prime commodities in the country.

Interviewed on Dobol B TV, acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar was asked if the economic cluster discussed the possibility of giving financial aid to households like in the Social Amelioration Program (SAP).

“Alam mo, kung gugustuhin talaga, mas gusto natin merong ayuda, may SAP lahat (If we really want, we prefer providing SAP for all),” he said.

But he pointed out the dilemma that if the excise tax on oil will be suspended, the government will lose funds for social services and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

“Kaya yun nga nandoon ‘yung magiging dilemma natin sapagkat kapag tinanggal mo yung excise tax, syempre maraming pondo ang mawawala doon sa social services, sa DSWD,” he added.

(That’s going to be the dilemma for us because if we cut the excise tax on fuel, of course, funds for social services and the DSWD will be lost.)

According to him, fuel excise tax suspension depends on the country's economic managers, but he reiterated the need for a source of funds for financial assistance.

“Pero logic would tell you that saan ka kukuha ng pera kung walang sources of funds. Wala tayong maiibigy, e ‘di uutang naman tayo (But logic would tell you where can you get these money without sources of funds. There is mothing we can give, so we will have to get loans again),” he added. —LBG, GMA News
