BIR collects nearly P3B in unpaid taxes from erring firms in 2021

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) collected around P3 billion in back taxes or unpaid tax obligations from erring establishments last year, the Department of Finance (DOF) said Thursday.

In a statement, the DOF said that the taxman’s Oplan Kandado program resulted in the shutdown of operations of 523 establishments last year for various Tax Code violations.

The BIR’s campaign against erring establishments resulted in a revenue take of P2.95 billion in back taxes, according to the Finance department.

BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay said the taxman was able to inspect 120,220 establishments nationwide in 2021 and collected an additional P122.4 million in penalties for registration-related violations.

Under its Run After Tax Evaders program, the DOF said that the BIR filed 137 cases before the Department of Justice involving aggregate tax liabilities of P4.4 billion and 17 cases before the Court of Tax Appeals with total estimated liabilities of P1.4 billion in 2021.

The BIR also collected a total of P3.91 billion in taxes from Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) as of December 2021. —VBL, GMA News
