Sy siblings continue to top Forbes' Philippines’ 50 Richest 2022

The combined wealth of Filipino tycoons declined in the past year amid the country’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic based on Forbes’ Philippines’ 50 Richest list, with the Sy siblings holding on to the top spot.

In its writeup, Forbes said the combined wealth of the richest 50 Filipinos fell to $72 billion in 2022 from $79 billion in the past year, with over two-thirds of the listees posting a decline in their wealth.

“[T]he pressures of inflation, rising commodity and energy prices as well as reduced exports to China dragged the benchmark stock index down 6% from 11 months ago when fortunes were last measured. The Philippine peso also plunged 12% over the same period,” it said.

The Sy siblings — who control the SM Group — continued to claim the top spot, even as their net worth dropped by $4 billion to $12.6 billion, marking the biggest decline in dollar terms.

They were followed by property tycoon Manuel “Manny” Villar Jr. with a fortune of $7.8 billion after adding $1.1 billion in the past year as the biggest dollar gainer.

The third stop was given to ports magnate Enrique Razon Jr., who saw a slight decline in his net worth to $5.6 billion.

The new entrants in this year’s list include the Po family at the 16th spot after inheriting the food empire of Ricardo Po Sr. — Century Pacific — who passed away in October 2021.

Sylvia Wenceslao also entered this year’s list with a net worth of $340 million as she took over as chairman of D.M Wenceslao & Associates, following the death of her husband Delfin Wenceslao last September.

Forbes’ downgraded the minimum net worth for this year’s list to $185 million from $200 million in the past year.
