DA to determine price and implementation of maximum SRP on pork

Pork prices will soon have a maximum suggested retail price similar to imported rice, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Ongoing studies are being undertaken to determine at what price they will set the maximum suggested retail price (MSRP). The target implementation date is also yet to be determined.

"Under study pa but itutulog yung msrp for pork," said Asst. Secretary Arnel de Mesa, DA spokesperson.

De Mesa said cases of african swine fever (ASF) rose in the third quarter of 2024. The industry is already recovering but pork prices remain high.

"Na-experience tayo ng matinding ASF noong third quarter of last year pero naka recover naman at yung huling report malaki na reduction sa mga active areas na may mga cases ng ASF," De Mesa explained.

Latest data from the Agriculture department showed that pork prices remains at a high of 480 pesos for liempo and 420 pesos for pigue, prompting the agency to consider msrp on pork.

De mesa said, "halimbawa sa bigas ang landed cost mo mababa but it's being sold at a higher price sa retail. Ganun din sa baboy. Ang farm gate mo 220, 240 kung patungan mo yan ng 100, 150 dapat nasa 350 to 360 hanggang 380. But we are seeing prices 460 to 450 so nakikita natin na mayroong maling pag presyo pag dating na palengke." — BAP, GMA Integrated News
