Workers’ coalition seeks audience with Marcos to discuss wage hike

A coalition of workers has called for a dialogue with President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. on the pending bills increasing the minimum wage hike for the private sector,

In a letter submitted to Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma on Thursday, April 24, the National Wage Coalition called on him to facilitate a dialogue between the President and the labor sector on wage hike legislations, saying it has become a matter of utmost urgency for Filipino workers.

“The rising cost of living and the alarming levels of hunger among Filipinos have underscored the inadequacy of current wage levels to provide a dignified standard of living. Despite the efforts of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards, the gaps in addressing the needs of our workers remain significant. The failure to implement meaningful wage adjustments has left many families struggling to meet their basic needs,” the coalition said in a statement signed off by Nagkaisa chairperson and 2025 elections Senate bet Sonny Matula.

The National Wage Coalition is composed of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino, Kilusang Mayo Uno, Nagkaisa and Trade Union Congress of the Philippines.

“In light of these challenges, we respectfully urge you to advocate for the certification of the proposed P200 daily minimum wage hike bill as urgent. This measure is essential to ensure that workers receive fair compensation that reflects the economic realities they face,” the coalition said.

“We believe that an upcoming dialogue with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Labor Day presents a critical opportunity to address this issue and demonstrate the government's commitment to the welfare of Filipino workers. We trust in your leadership and dedication to championing the rights and well-being of our labor force,” the coalition added.

Labor Day is set on May 1.

“We are confident that, under your guidance, meaningful progress car be achieved for the benefit of our workers and their families,” the coalition added.
