DA: Galunggong prices too high? Buy chicken instead

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. on Wednesday advised the public to just buy chicken instead of galunggong as the low supply is affecting the price of fish.

"Kung ganyan kamahal, mag manok na lang kayo," Tiu Laurel Jr. said in Luisito Santos' dzBB Super Radyo report Wednesday.

(If it's too expensive, just go for chicken.)

This, as he explained that the lack of supply has caused the spike in prices for galunggong.

"Konti lang daw ang pumapasok na galunggong ngayon kasi walang mabili sa sources. Talagang ang galunggong (prices) will remain high," explained the DA chief.

(We have a low supply right now because there is also nothing from our sources.)

Tiu Laurel Jr., meanwhile, said prices of mackerel (tulingan) are expected to go down following the delivery of 8,000 metric tons (MT) of small pelagic fish that the DA imported.

"The price of mackerel is expected to go down, lalo na papasok na yung importation," Tiu Laurel said.

(The price of mackerel is expected to go down, especially after the delivery of our import.)

The DA earlier announced it is planning to authorize the importation of an additional 8,000 metric tons of small pelagic fish, targeted for delivery in early December.

Data from the DA’s price monitoring showed that the price of local galunggong in Metro Manila markets is currently at P347.13 per kilo. Imported galunggong, meanwhile, was at P310.42 per kilo as of November 24 to November 29, 2025. —Sundy Locus/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
