Marcos orders release of P21.47B for fuel subsidy, infra projects — DBM
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the immediate release of P21.47 billion in public funds to roll out fuel subsidies and sustain infrastructure projects, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) said Friday.
In a statement, the DBM said P2.49 billion of the total was allocated to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for the Fuel Subsidy Program, which provides direct assistance to drivers and operators grappling with rising fuel costs.
The agency said the subsidy aims to help drivers continue operating without passing the full cost to commuters, thereby keeping fares stable and public transport accessible.
The President earlier directed the DOTr to suspend the implementation of approved fare hikes across most modes of public transport—except regular taxis and motorcycle taxis—just a day before they were set to take effect, as he vowed additional support for the sector amid the ongoing fuel crisis.
Meanwhile, P18.65 billion was released to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to sustain infrastructure projects nationwide, ensuring continued employment, safer roads, and uninterrupted economic activity.
Another P324.36 million was allocated to the DPWH to settle prior obligations for foreign-assisted infrastructure projects and ensure their timely completion.
“Every peso we release is meant to ease a burden, sustain a livelihood, or keep a service running for our people—especially at a time when global events beyond our control are affecting daily life here at home,” Budget Secretary Rolando Toledo said.
“At a time when global headwinds are pushing fuel prices up, it is critical that we step in where it matters most—supporting our drivers, protecting commuters, and ensuring that no Filipino is left to carry these challenges alone,” he added.
The DBM said all fund releases are subject to strict budgeting, accounting, and auditing safeguards to ensure assistance reaches intended beneficiaries and public funds are properly accounted for.
The department added it remains committed to acting swiftly and responsibly “so that even in times of global uncertainty, the needs of the Filipino people remain at the center of every decision.”—MCG, GMA Integrated News
