Transport group PISTON (Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide), together with allied progressive organizations, marched to Mendiola on Friday as part of the second day of their nationwide strike.

The groups urged the government to address rising fuel prices and low driver earnings amid President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to reject calls for fare increases.

According to a report by Luisito Santos on Super Radyo dzBB, members of PISTON and other groups marched from Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City to Mendiola, where a program was set to air their demands.

The protest comes as drivers continue to face reduced daily income due to high fuel costs, with transport groups saying current fares are insufficient to cover expenses.

Earlier, Marcos declined proposals to raise minimum jeepney fares, despite appeals from drivers and operators who said successive oil price hikes have squeezed their earnings.

Protest leaders said the situation has left many drivers struggling to meet daily boundary payments and household needs.

Police were deployed to maintain order, with negotiators and human rights officers coordinating with rally organizers to ensure a peaceful assembly. Authorities said they also reminded participants to keep the demonstration orderly.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
