CAAP pushes for sustainable aviation fuel to reduce emissions
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said it is pushing for the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in a bid to cut carbon emissions by as much as 80%.
CAAP said the initiative aims to reduce aviation carbon emissions by 65% to 80% while “safely” blending with conventional jet fuel.
The agency said the Philippines is “well-positioned” for the transition to SAF usage because of its strong agricultural sector, specifically rice and coconut production.
The waste materials of these products, CAAP said, could be converted into aviation fuel.
CAAP also organized a workshop with industry stakeholders on March 24, 2026 to delve into the matter.
The 2026 Sustainable Aviation Fuel Policy Development Workshop focused on feedstock availability, production technology, capacity-building, regulatory support, airline participation and investment opportunities needed to support SAF adoption in the Philippines.
"We reaffirm our commitment in making SAF adoption more viable and accessible, leveraging collaboration between government, industry, and private partners to shape a sustainable and forward-looking Philippine aviation sector," CAAP Director Raul Del Rosario said in a statement. — Giselle Ombay/RSJ, GMA News
