Luzon, Visayas grids under 'normal conditions' on May 16, 2026 —NGCP
The Luzon and Visayas power grids, after three straight days of being under yellow and red alerts, is operating “under normal conditions” on Saturday morning, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.
In an advisory, citing power transmission data as of 6 a.m., the NGCP said the Luzon island is currently operating at 15,799 megawatts (MW) capacity against a peak demand of 12,107 MW.
“The declaration of full capacity by GNPD 1 (668MW), EERI 2 (422MW), and EERI 3 (420MW) increased Luzon’s available capacity by a total of 1,510MW,” the grid operator said.
“Combined with the typically lower system demand during weekends, the resulting surplus capacity has enabled power exports from the Luzon grid to the Visayas grid,” it added.
The Visayas grid, on the other hand, is operating at an available capacity of 2,768 MW against a peak demand of 2,339 MW.
“The Visayas and Mindanao grids are also operating under normal conditions,” the NGCP said.
The grid operator noted that “the power situation for this weekend is expected to remain stable,” unless there would be unexpected increase in demand or additional unplanned outages of power facilities.
Electricity consumers across Luzon and Visayas grids faced rotating brownouts in the past three days as power supply became deficient due to forced outages of several plants combined with soaring demand amid the hot dry season weather. —KG, GMA News
