PH experiencing oversupply of egg

The Philippine Egg Board Association (PEBA) on Saturday said the country is experiencing an oversupply of eggs.

Interviewed on Super Radyo dzBB, PEBA chairman Gregorio San Diego said, “May oversupply talaga ng itlog.”

(There really is an oversupply of eggs.)

San Diego said the oversupply resulted from low demand and overproduction as many hog and poultry raisers opted to shift to egg production due to losses resulting from meat importation.

“Indirectly, ito ay resulta ng over importation natin ng karneng manok at karneng baboy. 'Yung mga nalugi sa baboy, manok ‘yung mga may kapital pa, pumasok sa negosyong paitlugan... Ang katwiran nila, dito na tayo, walang kalabang imported,” he said.

(This was an indirect result of over importation of chicken and pork meat. As those who faced losses from hog, poultry raising but still has capital, entered egg production… they thought there would be no imported competition.)

The PEBA chairman said the problem arose when layer breeders increased to 803,000 heads last year, “dapat mga 600,000 [heads] lang.”

San Diego said egg producers are keeping their hopes up with the opening of the school year for demand and prices to pick up. —Ted Cordero/ VAL, GMA News
