NGCP: Visayas grid on yellow alert on June 20, 2026

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Saturday amid expected high energy demand while multiple coal plants remain unavailable.

In its 9 a.m. advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Available capacity will be at 2,483MW while the peak demand was projected at 2,382MW.

The NGCP issues a yellow alert when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.

A total of 1,052MW is unavailable to the grid amid issues affecting multiple power plants.

Aside from the high demand forecast, the grid provider attributed the yellow alert declaration to the unavailability of large coal plants in the Visayas, namely the TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3, and KSPC 1.

It also reported that 16 plants are on forced outage on June 2026, eight plants since May 2026, and one plant since March 2026.

As for those with longer issues, three plants are on forced outage since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and 1 plant since 2021.

Thirteen plants, meanwhile, are running on derated capacities. — VDV, GMA News
