Visayas grid to be under yellow alert on Friday, July 31, 2026

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the Visayas grid will be placed under yellow alert on Friday evening, July 31, 2026.

The yellow alert will be in effect from 6 to 7 p.m., according to the NGCP advisory.

The NGCP said the available capacity of the grid is 2,564MW, but peak demand is estimated to be 2,321MW.

"A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," it added.

The company also said some plants are on forced outage or are running on derated capacities, as follows:

  • 5 plants on forced outage on July 2026;
  • 3 plants on forced outage since June;
  • 7 plants on forced outage since May
  • 1 plant on forced outage since March
  • 3 plants on forced outage since 2025
  • 2 plants on forced outage since 2024
  • 2 plants on forced outage since 2023
  • 1 plant on forced outage since 2021
  • 14 plants running on derated capacities

These have resulted in having a total of 969MW unavailable to the grid, NGCP said.

Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1&2 and CEDC 1 were also unavailable, while KSPC 1 had an emergency shutdown on Thursday, July 30 due to boiler tube leak, the company added. —KG, GMA News
