Visayas grid on red and yellow alerts on Monday, August 24, 2026

The Visayas grid will be placed on red and yellow alerts on Monday, August 24, 2026 due to limited power supply, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The grid will be on yellow alert from 2 to 5 p.m., then red alert from 5 to 8 p.m., then finally yellow alert from 8 to 9 p.m., NGCP said in an advisory.

The available capacity of the grid is at 2,312 MW while peak demand is estimated to be at 2,395 MW.

The NGCP said some plants are also on forced outage or running on derated capacities, as follows:

On forced outage:

• 8 plants in August 2026;
• 1 plant since July;
• 3 plants since June;
• 7 plants since May;
• 1 plant since March;
• 3 plants since 2025;
• 2 plants since 2024;
• 2 plants since 2023; and
• 1 plant since 2021.

On derated capacities:

• 13 plants

These resulted in 896.3MW unavailable to the grid, the NGCP said.

The company also said Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, KSPC 1 are unavailable.

There is also a limited power import from Mindanao due to the high demand forecast there.

These two factors contributed to the declaration of the red and yellow alerts.

"A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement," NGCP said.

"A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," it added. —KG, GMA News
