The Philippine National Police (PNP) will intensify the monitoring of vehicles with heavily tinted windows in line with the strict implementation of various laws for road safety in the country.

"How can you say that person is using his cellphone when in fact you cannot even see what's inside, 'di ba? Even the seatbelt law. Ilan na ba ang nahuli dati na violation of seatbelt law when in fact hindi mo naman makita kung 'yung tao dun ay naka-seatbelt o hindi?" PNP chief General Oscar Albayalde said in Katrina Son's report on GMA's 24 Oras Weekend on Sunday.

The order was made to ensure that laws such as the Anti-Distracted Driving Act, Seatbelts Use Act, at Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act are effectively being implemented.

The PNP-Highway Patrol Group admitted that very dark tints make it difficult for them to apprehend violators.

"Hindi natin makikita 'yung nasa loob. Hindi natin makikita kung naka-safe siya, hindi makikita kung may bata," HPG chief Police Brigadier General Roberto Fajardo said.

Albayalde said he has already discussed the matter with Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade.

The PNP-HPG, on the other hand, will visit shops that install window tints in order to remind them of the grade of tint that is allowed under the law.

Former Land Transportation Office chief and incumbent Secretary General of the Philippine Global Road Safety Alberto Suansing expressed his support for the PNP's move. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
