Roque: Private vehicles would need either emission or motor inspection certificate for registration

Private vehicles would need to pass either a certificate from emission centers or private motor vehicle inspection to register their vehicles, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Friday.

Roque made the the clarification a day after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the deferment of Department of Transportation (DOTr) policy of mandating the private vehicles to undergo a 73-point road worthy inspection check under private motor vehicle inspection centers (PMVIC) due to additional cost that it brings to the public amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ang mga operator ng PMVIC ay nagsabi na ang singil [na] nila ay kapareho lang ng emission centers na P600. Dalawa po iyong puwede ninyong isumite: iyong [galing sa] emission [centers] na dati na o iyong sa MVIS (motor vehicle inspection service) [under PMVIC],” Roque said during Laging Handa.

“Hindi po puwedeng wala pareho [para sa registration],” Roque added.

Senators earlier called for the scrapping of the rollout of 138 PMVIC nationwide which initially imposed an inspection fee of P1,800 from motor vehicles weighing 4,500 kilograms or less for vehicles seeking registration.

If the vehicle fails the test, it will be required to undergo necessary repairs and taken back to the private inspection centers where the motorist is charged an additional P900 reinspection fee to obtain clearance. — Llanesca T. Panti/RSJ, GMA News
