HPG launches crackdown on fake green plates

The Highway Patrol Group (HPG) on Wednesday said it has launched a crackdown against vehicles with fake green plates, which are designated for hybrid (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV) only.

In a press conference, HPG acting director Police Colonel Hansel Marantan said that some vehicle owners were displaying fake green plates to be exempted from the number coding scheme.

“I am referring to those motor vehicles sporting green plates that are not supposed to use that because it is illegal. Illegal in the sense that they are not listed from the DOE list. The intention is to evade coding schemes,” Marantan said.

“Tanggalin namin sila [We will remove them],” he added.

Marantan said the HPG has received the list from the Department of Energy (DOE) with around thousands of entries.

Upon apprehension, the HPG official said violators will receive tickets and their fake green plates will be removed. Their violations will be referred to the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

“Ire-refer to the LTO. Puwede naming tanggalin yung plaka. Well, bigyan namin sila ng ticket kaagad. At bayaran nila yung tickets nila for violations before the LTO. And then ayusin na nila yung plaka nila,” he said.

(We will refer them to the LTO. We can remove the license plate. Well, we will give them a ticket immediately. And they will pay their tickets for violations before the LTO. And then they will fix their license plate.)

Under the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), HEVs and EVs with green plates are exempted from the number coding scheme until 2030. — BM, GMA Integrated News
