GSIS hikes funeral benefit to P50,000
The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has allocated P1.25 billion annually to increase funeral benefits for government workers and qualified pensioners to P50,000, set to benefit up to 25,000 families across the country every year.
In an advisory, GSIS said the increased funeral benefit — up from P30,000 previously — will be made available for all claims on or after Monday, July 13, 2026.
“The funeral benefit is one of the most immediate forms of assistance we give our members. Raising it to P50,000 shows how seriously the GSIS takes that responsibility,” GSIS president and general manager Jose Arnulfo “Wick” Veloso said.
The funeral benefit is available to qualified active members, separated members entitled to future separation or retirement benefits, old-age pensioners, and retirees.
The one-time payment of P50,000 will be payable to a single qualified beneficiary or claimant. It is paid to beneficiaries in order of priority — the legitimate spouse, the legitimate child who paid for the funeral expense, or any person who can present proof of having shouldered the funeral expenses.
“Every family deserves support and dignity when they lose someone they love. Raising the funeral benefit to P50,000 means the GSIS stands beside our members’ families at the exact moment they need us most,” Veloso said.
Under its charter, the GSIS is mandated to ensure that its members are insured against the occurrence of certain contingencies in exchange for their monthly premium contributions. They are entitled to benefits such as life insurance, separation or retirement benefits, and disability benefits. — RSJ, GMA News
