12 hurt in Makati elevator accident

Twelve people, most of them call center agents, were hurt in an elevator accident in one of the buildings along Ayala Avenue in Makati City, according to Luisito Santos' report on Dobol B sa News TV on Friday.

Citing Makati City Police chief Senior Superintendent Rogelio Simon, the report said the victims sustained minor injuries after one of PBCom Tower's elevators, which came from the 52nd floor, malfunctioned at around 1 a.m.

From 52nd floor, the elevator dropped to 30th floor before the emergency brake worked. However, the door refused to open once the elevator reached the 12th floor where it went straight to the ground floor.

In a statement, PBCom said the lift "descended rapidly from the 30th floor. The descent triggered the emergency breaking [sic] system." It added that the elevator was carrying 32 passengers which was over its maximum capacity.

PBCom said 21 were injured and "are undergoing treatment in local hospitals."

"They are being attended to by the building administration for their medical expenses," it said. —KBK, GMA News
