Expect ‘cooler’ LRT2 trains as aircon units undergo temporary fix before being replaced

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) has started taking measures to improve the temperature inside LRT2 coaches by fixing the air conditioning units (ACU) which will eventually be replaced with new ones.

“Our Engineering and Maintenance Team has started re-engineering the control board module of the trains ACU to temporarily address the problem,” the LRTA posted on their website.

“Expect a cooler and more comfortable journey this second week of June as we exhaust all efforts to fix our trains. We expect to finish the reengineering works within the next six weeks,” LRTA added.

The said measure is just a temporary fix as they will soon replace the old air condition units with new ones which could take from eight to 12 months to complete.

Eighty air conditioning units will be replaced by Multi-Scan Corporation and MRAIL Inc. Joint Venture for 10 operational trains of LRT2.

Compliant with the Clean Air Act, the new cooling units use more environment-friendly refrigerant that is energy-efficient, the LRTA said.

But because of the installation process, LRTA Administrator Reynaldo Berroya advised passengers to allot extra time for their commute as the number of running trains will be reduced.

“We are advising our passengers to leave their homes earlier than usual because of the expected average of nine to 10 minutes time interval between the arrivals of trains from the usual seven to eight minutes,” Berroya said.

“We beg for your indulgence in this regard as we continue to improve train facilities for your comfort and convenience,” he advised. — Joviland Rita/MDM, GMA News
