MRT3 rehab, maintenance starts

The 43-month rehabilitation and maintenance of the MRT-3, led by the Sumitomo-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and TES Philippines, kicked off early Wednesday.

According to Saleema Refran's exclusive report on GMA's 24 Oras, the maintenance crew started their shift at midnight—working on train bogeys and wheels.

A total of 72 coaches need a general overhaul. Aside from daily maintenance, each will undergo assessment, as well as preventive and corrective maintenance.

The project also covers improving the rails, power supply, signalling, and the communications system.

Train stations, elevators, escalators, comfort rooms, and the security system are also part of the project scope.

"Ang makikita natin dyan ay 18 hanggang 20 tren na tumatakbo sa linya at ang speed nya from the current na 30kph magiging 60kph. Ano ang magiging epekto nyan? Mas mapapabilis, reliable at mas marami tayong pasahero na maisasakay," said MRT3 Operations Director Michael Capati.

The promised convenience, however, will have to be preceded by some adjustments that would require the understanding and cooperation of MRT3 riders.

Once the replacement of rails begins, operation hours may be shortened; it may also suspend services during long weekends to give way to the rehabilitation.

When the general overhaul phase begins, available trains may be lessened.

Capati said that the rail line will release timely advisories before implementing these adjustments.

"Kung saka-sakali naman pong kailangan natin magsakripisyo again ng konti. Ito naman po ay papalitan ng magandang serbisyo pagkatapos naman po ng rehabilitation," he added. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
