END OF AN ERA

Francis Zamora defeats Janella Estrada in San Juan mayoralty race

Francis Zamora is the new mayor of San Juan City, defeating incumbent vice mayor Janella Estrada, and ending the 49-year-rule of the Estradas.

In a report by Julie Ann Mae Cabrera on Super Radyo DZBB, Zamora was formally proclaimed by the city Board of Canvasser on Monday night.

It was a father-son victory in the city as Ronaldo "Ronnie" Zamora, Francis's father, trounced Edu Manzano in the race for the lone congressional district post.

A separate report by Katrina Son on Eleksyon 2019: The GMA News and Public Affairs Special Coverage, Francis Zamora got 35,016 votes as against Janella Estrada's 24,813 votes.

In the congressional race, Ronaldo Zamora has 35,386 votes while Manzano gathered 23,627 votes.

Warren Villa was proclaimed vice mayor with 28,882 votes, beating rivals Boy Celles (24,465) and Glenn Angeles (6,104).

San Juan has a total registered voters of 82,977.

End of the Estrada Era

The victory of Francis Zamora ended the 49-year rule of the Estradas in the city.  Among the former mayors were Joseph Estrada, who became president in 1998;  his sons Juan Victor Ejercito and Jinggoy Estrada, who are both seeking seats as senator; and Guia Gomez, Estrada's former partner.

In the 2016 elections, Francis Zamora ran against Gomez, but was defeated by less than 2,000 votes.  Zamora protested the win.

The rivalry for the mayoralty post also ended the political partnership of the Estradas and the Zamoras in the city.

"Kasaysayan po ito sa aming lungsod," Francis Zamora said, adding that the Estrada's ruled since he was born.

Young blood, old name

But while representing the young blood, the Zamoras are old names in San Juan, with Ronnie Zamora, who is seeking his ninth term as member of the House of Representatives.

"Ito na po ang makabagong lunsod ng San Juan," Francis Zamora said.

he said he would prioritize providing shelter for his constituents through the construction of high-rise public housing projects. —Dona Magsino/JST, LDF, GMA News
