LRT2 temporarily halts operation due to power supply problem caused by fire

Operation of the LRT2 was temporarily suspended a few minutes before noon on Thursday due to a fire that affected its power supply.

"As of 11:24 AM, LRT-2 operation is temporarily suspended. Investigation and intervention is ongoing. Apologies for the inconvenience," its management said in an advisory.

According to Atty. Hernando Cabrera, LRTA spokesperson, the operation was halted after the rectifier in the Katipunan area caught fire and cut the power supply for trains.

"Ang rectifier parang transformer 'yan. Kumbaga sa mga bahay natin, puwede ring maikumpara ito sa mga power surge protector. Ang purpose niyan talaga is to regulate 'yung ating power supply," Cabrera told Dobol B sa News TV.

"Since walang power supply doon sa area na 'yun, technically buong linya hindi na rin namin mapapatakbo kasi magbabara 'yung mga tren doon sa area, mawawalan sila ng power," he added.

The technical staff is still probing the possible cause of the glitch. Affected passengers have been evacuated.

Cabrera said that the personnel are trying to restore the operations from Recto to Cubao stations or Recto to Anonas stations. —Dona Magsino/KBK, GMA News
