P10M worth of fake footwear confiscated by NBI in Las Piñas

NBI operatives on Saturday confiscated P10 million worth of fake footwear at a factory in Las Piñas City, according to a report by Mav Gonzales on GMA News TV's Balitanghali Weekend.

The raid was conducted after the NBI received a tip from the trademark owner of a known footwear brand in the Philippines.

Armed with a search warrant, operatives from the NBI-Intellectual Property Rights Division went to a warehouse in Las Piñas City.

The warehouse was locked thus authorities had to force it open.

Thousands of boxes of fake slippers and footwear were found inside the warehouse.

The NBI believes the warehouse is the source of fake footwear being sold in different parts of the country.

The smell of rubber was undeniable inside the factory.

Atty. Editha Hechanova, legal counsel of the trademark owner of the legitimate footwear brand, said the genuine products they sell do not have such a smell.

She noted that the fake goods found in the warehouse had inferior quality and lacked features found in the genuine products.

The NBI is still trying to identify the owner of the warehouse since only a caretaker was there when they conducted the raid.

According to the NBI, it appears that the counterfeit goods came from China.

The NBI also went to three malls in Pasay City and raided outlets selling the fake footwear sourced from the warehouse.

A total of 120,000 pairs of fake footwear were confiscated from the warehouse and the stores.

The NBI urged the public not to buy counterfeit goods as those manufacturing and distributing such do not pay the right taxes to the government.

The public is also not assured of the quality of fake goods, the NBI added. —KG, GMA News
