Foodpanda riders protest alleged unfair labor practices in front of DOLE office

Several riders of food delivery service provider Foodpanda on Wednesday held a motorcade in front of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) office in Intramuros, Manila to oppose alleged unfair labor practices.

In a Dobol B sa News TV report by Isa Avendaño-Umali, more than 50 riders have lined up to air their grievances on the unfair treatment of delivery riders.

The delivery riders claimed they are receiving less in their payments per delivery due to the company's supposed unfair grading system.

Compensated based on distance

In a statement, Foodpanda Philippines said that the company has communicated the new payment structure for its freelance food delivery riders prior to its implementation in June.

“With the new scheme, riders are now compensated based on delivery distance, making the payment structure more organized and fair,” it said.

Foodpanda noted that the new payment scheme has been rolled in stages across the country for a period of over five months.

Nevertheless, the company said it is looking into the concerns of the rider partners.

Police force in Intramuros confronted the riders as they allegedly disrupted patients of a clinic and caused traffic jam in the area.

The situation was soon put into order as Manila Police District Station 5 commander Ariel Caramoan intervened at the scene.
